Last week I shared how bed head prevents you from retaining length. Great. But how do we prevent bed head from happening in the first place?
Here are 5 simple steps to prevent bed head:
1- Moisturize (apply water or aloe vera juice and optionally apply a little leave in conditioner) to your hair before bed and seal in the moisture with a light oil. This is especially important if your hair is prone to drying out. Dry hair is a friend to bed head.
2- Sleep on a satin or silk pillow case. This will protect your hair from losing moisture which can lead to bed head.
3- Secure your hair at night. Don’t allow the hair to roam free while you sleep. Pull it all into a ponytail, bun or put it in a few twists or braids
4- Double protect the moisture in your hair by covering it with a satin or silk bonnet, scarf or other protective hair tool like a LocSoc.
5- Consider using a humidifier while you sleep. It will help impart moisture to the air which will eventually settle into your hair. This is helpful in the event your scarf or bonnet comes off or if you’re like me, rip it off because you’re too hot!
Bed head is totally preventable. We have enough concerns when it comes to caring for our hair and protecting our length. Bed head shouldn’t be one of them.
