Survive Winter With This Anti-Dry Skin Checklist
ByIt’s official. Winter is here.
If you haven’t revamped your beauty arsenal for the products you’ll need to protect and prevent dry skin during winter then, ummm what are you waiting for?!
Dry skin is almost inevitable in the winter if you aren’t following a special regimen – unless you have oily skin of course. Even then, it doesn’t take much for the harsh cold weather to strip your skin of the oil and moisture it needs to stay soft and supple.
Checklist for Dry Skin Health
If you have yet to prepare for winter skin care, here’s a checklist of things to get you started:
- Replace moisturizing lotions with creams, balms and butters. These are much more hydrating and help seal moisture into the skin for longer periods of time.
- Make sure the first ingredient of your moisturizer is water followed by a natural oil like olive, jojoba or grape seed. The exception is when you’re stepping right out of the shower and sealing in the moisture (water) that’s already on your skin with a product like Shea Butter.
- Once weekly before showering, dry brush your skin. This will slough off dead skin cells that are dried out and dull.
- Avoid hot and/or long showers. Take warm to cool showers and keep them short. Long hot showers strip your skin of its natural oils.
- Pamper your hands and feet. Use gentle foot scrub followed by applying a creamy moisturizer on your hands and feet and seal in the moisture by immediately putting on cotton gloves and socks.
- Opt for using skin care products formulated for sensitive skin. These products usually contain no fragrance which further irritates dry skin.
- Remove all makeup before going to bed at night. Leaving residual traces of makeup on your skin makes it more prone to drying out.
- Invest in a humidifier. Adding moisture to your bedroom air helps to keep your skin hydrated while you sleep.
- Drink plenty of fresh water daily. The rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily. That may be difficult if you’re not used to regularly drinking water. Try to gradually increase your water intake. A tip someone taught me was to set an alarm to drink a glass each hour until you’ve reached your goal.
- Skin still dry? Try a serum that’s full of humectants. These penetrate deeper into the skin and deliver longer lasting moisture. You can even use a serum in conjunction with a cream moisturizer for deeper hydration to your skin.

Thanks! I need to take to heart the short/cooler showers suggestion. I am a shower lover, especially warm showers in winter.

Hey Alison. It’s definitely not easy to cut down on your long hot showers especially when it’s so cold outside but you must!
I usually only get one long shower in on the weekend when I’m washing my hair. Otherwise, I’m in and out in 3 mins flat

I know I’m a little late, but this checklist is so helpful! I usually alternate moisturizers in the summer and winter, but for some reason I totally forgot this time around. I may have to print this list off for future reference (and to pass along helpful info to my mommy and sis). Thanks for sharing this, Michelle!

It was a crazy 17 degrees here just yesterday and the day before but thank God the temps warmed up to 45 today.
