Best Braidout Ever

Michelle March 26, 2012 26

I’ve never been a fan of braid outs for a curly hair do. My natural hair always came out very choppy and piecey looking.

failed braid out

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As my hair gets longer, the results get better. Even more than the a better result from increased length is the technique that I’ve been using.

Instead of putting my hair in box braids and releasing them, I cornrowed my hair and then released:

a lot more edgy. I like!

This is definitely my best braid out ever and while I don’t plan on doing them often (trying to keep the protective styling going), I will definitely redo them using the method of cornrowing vs. individual braids.

More on my braid out technique:

  • Done on completely dry hair
  • Used a dab of Doris of NY Olive Cream on each section before braiding
  • Left the cornrows in for 2 days before releasing (this allows them to set longer – a must for my fine hair)
  • Carefully unbraided each row with oiled hands
  • Ran my fingers through the root of each section while holding head downward
Of course, you may have different results with your curly hair. I’ve seen some really nice braid out styles that were achieved with simple box braids.
Which do you prefer? Braid outs or twist outs?

This looks great Michelle!! I think that your trim probably also helped it look more full! I used to do cornrow braid outs when I was relaxed and it worked well. Haven’t tried one in a while though. I like TnCs the best on me, now that I’ve mastered the set that gives me the results I want.

Leah, have you tried the satin braid out? I liked those results better.

I like it! I don’t like to do twist outs or braid outs because my short hair tends to just frizz like crazy.

Thanks! I wish I could do twist outs. I see people get great results but my hair doesn’t curly up enough

Thanks Mary. As you can see from the first pic, me and braid outs don’t do so well either LOL. I’ll never do them again from box braids. Well, never say never. If my hair ever gets to 100% waist arm pit length or longer, I may change that

Looks really good!! When I try braid out my hair always looks stringy. TnC make my hair look so much fuller also not washing it makes it look quadruple in size.

So it seems EVERYBODY is having that stringy problem. See! I think once the hair is really long it looks better with braid outs

Wow I haven’t been to your blog in a while but I’m glad I came today. I really love how your hair looks. The second photo is my fave, it’s sooo nice!! And I really love the scarf in the last photo as well.

Thanks Mia. That’s my husband’s favorite too :-) That was actually 2nd or 3rd day hair. It looked nicer as the time went because although the definition was relaxing some, it got a little fuller

Your braidout looks lovely! Mine always come out horribly unless they are cornrowed and released. I need to put in some practice loll

That came out niiiiiice! That reminds me that I want to do a twist out with two strand flat twists like I used to do before cutting my hair. Since cutting my hair, I’ve only done a twist out with regular two strand twists.

Rece, I absolutely love how healthy your hair looks. I can only imagine. Your twist outs will look really full and nice.
I also applaud you of not being afraid of the scissors LOL. I never like to cut my hair then when I do i’m all anxious and trying to minimize how much gets cut
