Elegant Pin Curled Updo Tutorial

When you have a goal to grow your hair to the longest length possible, one of the things you can do to accomplish your goal is protective styling.

Protective styling can be boring so learning to create intricate looking yet simple to create styles is a must to keep you going with your protective hairstyling.

In the video below, I do what is my very first hairstyle tutorial: The Elegant Pin Curled Up-do Bun

Normally, I just create a slideshow of hairstyles that include buns, curls up-dos and other protective styles for long or medium length hair. However, I’ve received inquiries as to how I do some of my styles so tutorials it is.

The items I used to create this look as mentioned in the video are:

  • Shea Moisture Organic Coconut and Hibiscus Hold and Shine Moisture Mist (optional)
Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel (but preferably Aloe Vera Gel)
    Jane Carter Nourish and Shine
    Goody Two in One Brush
    Banana Clip
    Goody Double Coated Bobby Pins
    Stretchy headband

Key take aways:

  • No comb is used through the hair to prevent ripping.
  • A butter based moisturizer can be used to cut down on the crunch created by gel
  • It’s much more gentle on fine strands to finger detangle.
  • Goody double coated open ended bobby pins are the best. Don’t skimp on these.

  1. This is gorgeous! I hope to make something like this with my two strands one day =) You have very healthy hair as well and the finger detangling tip is point on. Its a saviour for fine strands in my opinion =)

    • Hey Bdanni. Welcome to RBB :-) Thanks for the compliment. Finger detangling is definitely a saving grace for me to retain some length.

    • Hi Kiki, you’re right. I’m APL for most of it. My crown is a little shorter.

No blow drying for me. I let my hair air dry. I haven’t used heat for styling in over a year.
all I did was wash, condition and put it in a few two strand twists

  2. This is so cute, Michelle! I am so in love with your luscious locks!!!!!! All that healthy hair!!!!!

I also like that you don’t use a comb to style this either. Simple and by all means protectivge. Love, love, love.

  3. Loooovveee this style. I agree, your hair looks super shiny and healthy.
Regarding the video, I was thinking that your hair looks really straight. I’m glad your clarified that it’s not heat damaged or anything (although I know that, other people may not).

Girl, you put a lot of product in your hair! I’ve cut back tremendously. How long does this style last for you?

    • Hey Rece-

I don’t really put a lot of product in my hair. Only on the edges. I have to make sure I layer that Jane Carter Nourish and Shine over the gel so it doesn’t get crunchy. And I also use the Jane Carter to seal my hair sometimes. It’s actually pretty light when it melts.

The style would probably last a few days but I take it down every night. I can’t sleep in that banana clip LOL.

  4. Thanks Leah. For the first in years I’m being kind to it :-) I haven’t used heat since last year April. I plan to straighten in a couple of weeks though. Maybe trim.
