How to Protective Style With Sophistication: The Sophisticated Bun Series

Michelle November 21, 2011 21

It’s common knowledge that if you want your hair to retain length, you must practice some sort of protective styling on a regular basis.

Any hairstyle that tucks away most to all of your hair’s ends from the elements is considered protective. The most effective protective styles are twists, braids, and buns.

The hair bun is one of the most common protective styles worn. That’s because it’s easy to create and requires very little manipulation of your hair.

Tired of The Same Old Bun?

But suppose you love buns as a protective style but you’re tired of the same old look?

I’ve been there. That’s why I decided to create some creative and sophisticated hairstyles that play on the classic bun.

For the next 7 weeks, each Monday I’ll share 7 bun based hairstyles that you can recreate to add a little spice to your protective hairstyle arsenal. The best part is you can change them up slightly to create an entirely different look!

Here’s the first:

Center Braided Wide Bun

 Items Used:

    • Hair pins
    • Bobby pins
    • Banana Clip
    • Decorate hair stick
    • Aloe Vera Gel

The Technique:

    1.  Starting with hair that was stretched with bantu knots over night.
    2. After releasing, hair is smoothed with hands & aloe vera gel – then vertically secured in a banana clip.
    3. The loose hair is then sectioned into 3.
    4. Clip the outer sections away from the center and then cornrow the center section downward.
    5. Pin, the braided section under the banana clip
    6. Pin curl the left and right sides of the hair along each side
    7. Secure any loose hairs.

This look has the potential to be different each time you do it. How you pin will make determine if you have a wide or narrow bun. I wanted  bigger hair in the back so I pinnned large sections to result in more fulness.  You can also opt to roll each outer section over the banana clip.

Looks good! I’m still sporting a fierce TWA so I can’t put my hair into a bun.

Before you know it, your hair will be growing down your shoulders! I think it happens when we are paying least attention to our hair.

:-) The Banana Clip rocks! The other styles will be banana clip based too. Some will be with scrunchies though :-)

Oh! That’s cute… and different. I like it! When my hair gets a little longer, I’ll try it. Ooohhhh… what about that style but with a two strand flat twist down the middle. That would be cute too.

Hey Rece, yes the two strand twist would work too. I did a braid because I thought it would look more defined but you can definitely do anything to be creative ! :-)
