Red lips never really go out of style. I don’t know why there’s an alert for red lips just about every season of the year.

The various shades of red never cease to amaze me though. There’s got to be hundreds of shades of red available from different brands. You just have to know how to choose the right red lipstick for your personality and skin color.

There are shades of red that are classic. These classic colors tend to be in the matte family. Then, there are shades of red that are more flirtacious. The flirty colors are sheer and screaming with shine. It doesn’t matter if you prefer one type over the other. You can find a time and place for either.

How to Wear Red Lipstick Tips from The Pros

Whichever way you lean (I don’t judge), how you apply your lipstick or gloss will make all the difference between smudged lips that reak of amateur application and smooth sexy lips that beg to be pardoned.

For creating a classic lip, Celebrity Makeup artist Oslyn Holder shares a tip in the upcoming issue of Essence. Oslyn recommends blending lip liner and lipstick well by lining the outer corners of the lips with a lipstick that’s slightly darker than the actual lipstick.

To create a more flirty girl lip, sheer lip stains and lip pencils should be used to apply a subtle color says Marcia Caster, Beauty and Fashion Editorial Manager for Essence. She also recommends exfoliating your lips for a smoother application. In my humble opinion, exfoliating your lips weekly makes for great lip care in general.

The Trends

red lip alertThe shades of red on the market right now are mostly crimson. Depending on your favorite brand you’ll find colors for fair, medium and dark skin. The price can be as cheap as $3 and as expensive as $75 (depending on the brand).

This month’s issue of Essence shares shades of Classic and Flirty red by Young Blood, Dior, Urban Decay, Dolce & Gabana, Clinique, Wet ‘N Wild, MAC and more. I don’t know about you but I’m willing to reinstate a little red into my lip life. Dolce & Gabana’s Gloss Fusion Lipstick in Infatuation is looking pretty fab.

So, what type of red do you prefer on your lips…Classic or Flirty?

When I was in high school, red lipstick was my signature. It went so well with my skin color. However, now I tried wearing some and it just didn’t look right. I don’t if it matched my age now.

Hey Miche’al, you can definitely still rock red. You just have to find the right shade. With your lighter complexion I”m sure you can get away with a red shade that’s more sheer than matte. I feel like matte is more for old ladies lol

I love classic red lips and flirty red lips. Both for different occasions, of course. A classic red lip is my statement making look, while I wear flirty red lips on date night with hubs.

I don’t think red lips will ever go out of style!

Funny I came across this post! I recently purchased “Flame” by CG and the Revlon ColorBurst L/g in “Strawberry” to top it off. I consider it classic & flirty. Its a type of deep melon/red/orange and I love it. Experimenting is good! Nice post
