Beauty Items for The Skillfully Challenged

Hair, Nail & Beauty products for easy beauty routines

So, I meant to publish this post back in 2013 but was enjoying vacation sooooo much (3 whole weeks!) that I didn’t get around to it. Forgive me. Let blogging resume….

Have you ever seen a hairdo or a manicure you absolutely loved and then when you went to recreate it, it was a hot mess? Me too!

Well, fortunately technology has evolved to the point of simplifying beauty. Below are some beauty items that make otherwise “difficult” to achieve beauty routines much easier for those of us who are let’s say….skillfully challenged :-)

nail vinylsNail vinyls make creating designs like chevron or zebra nails so easy to do. No more free handing for me! Check out this site The prices are great and even I was able to successfully create some pretty cool manicures. Here’s one that looks simple but if you don’t have a steady hand, you need some nail vinyls to help you out:

Want a salon worthy manicure that shines bright like a diamond? Gel manicures are made easy with the Gelish Basix Kit! (link at bottom of post)

I have always wanted brows as sharp as the actresses you see in the movies. While there are some skilled ladies out there in the “real world,” many ladies don’t know how to define their brows. Eyebrow stencils make the job much easier.

While I have finally discovered how to tame my brows, when I want to try on a different shape, eyebrow stencils help make it happen.

As Seen on TV is one of the best sources to find hair accessories to help you create hairstyles that may seem difficult without them. Here are a few of the ones I’ve used:

- Bun maker
- Bump it – instant volume without all the teasing
- Topsy Tail – for unique hairstyles

Check out this quick demo of how easy it is to use the Topsy Tail on natural hair:

If you’re skillfully challenged with creating certain beauty looks in any way (like me!), you know how valuable beauty tools like these are. They help simplify and make life easier. Long gone are the days of plain manicures, ratchet brows and plains ‘ole hairdo’s!

3 Ways to Condition Your Cuticles

cuticle conditioners

cuticle conditioners

I’m such a girly girl and I love it! :-) Part of being a girly girl, you tend to look for all sorts of beauty tips and ways to do one simple thing LOL.

Some women just look for the most practical way to accomplish their beauty routines. I envy women like that because they can go from drab to fab in no time flat. Me? I need to ponder over ways to look good, style my hair, put on make up and care for my skin.

One of the things that I spend a lot of time on is my nails. Part of my nail care is my cuticle maintenance. One thing I can’t stand is to see beautiful nail polish on fingers with peeling skin around the nail. Yuck.

I used to get my nails done at nail salons. Part of the manicure process was caring for the cuticles. I never felt quite right about having someone else cut my cuticles (with a non sterile instrument, no doubt). I decided I would learn to care for my own nails and cuticles and that’s what I’ve done.

There’s 3 ways that I know of to condition the cuticles. I like to switch up each time because it just makes me feel, well….smart LOL

The first method of conditioning your cuticles is widely known. Use a cuticle oil or conditioner either before or after a manicure is done. You can even use these cuticle care products when you aren’t getting a manicure done. There are two other ways I condition my cuticles on a rotating basis:

  • Massaging Vitamin E into the cuticles after washing hands
  • Soak hands in warm water with olive oil added to it. You can do this even when you aren’t doing/getting a manicure. If you do it after a manicure, just make sure your nails are dry. The warm water can melt your polish and that’s no bueno!

How do you care for your cuticles?

In Review: Nail Fabulosity & Bells Kandi Thermal Nail Polishes

indie nail polish

thermal nail polishes

Last week I shared how I attended a NYCNail Girls Meetup. During that time I picked up quite a few new bottles of nail polishe including a couple of bottles of non-toxic thermal indie nail polish. I purchased a bottle from Nail Fabulosity and I received a bottle from Bell’s Kandi out of the grab bag.

Getting right to the point, I LOVE these thermal nail polishes. I know it isn’t all that new but it’s pretty new to me since I’ve stuck with “traditional” polish for so long.

I really like the gradient effect you get with thermal polishes.

Nail Fabulosity vs. Bell’s Kandi

indie nail polish

Up and coming new comer, Nail Fabulosity has joined the ranks of other Indie Polish creators like Bell’s Kandi. They both offer cruelty free non-toxic nail polish. These nail polishes do not contain the chemicals dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene or formaldehyde,

Not to pit the two against each other but there are some differences. Both are very good quality but here are the differences I noticed between the  bottles I received:

* The Nail Fabulosity color (Butterfly Kisses) pops almost immediately. I could have gone with one coat but used two for good measure :-) The thermal characteristic is very vivid and  pretty. I love how the gradient reminded me much of “sponging” (something I’ve never been good at)

Check out NailFabulosity here

* The Bells Kandi’s polish (Best Friends) is more of a pearlish color. I had to apply 3 coats to obtain the true color. Also, the gradient effect isn’t as visible. The gradient was slightly apparant (as seen in the photo above) but dissipated shortly after. Remember, mood rings? They would change colors with the temperature (mood). Well, this nail polish is sort of light blue most of the time but when thetemperature changes it becomes a slightly deeper blue but not really a gradient.

Check out Bell’s Kandi here

While there are differences in the final result of each thermal polish, it’s more than likely attributed to the characteristics of the two formulas (secret formulas no doubt!). Depending on the look you are going for, you may find different shades and effects with each brand.
