ModCloth Dazzling in the Daytime Inspired Manicure

modcloth dazzling dress manicure

Every now and again I post something fashion related here on Radiant Brown Beauty. These posts are usually reserved for special occasions. Well, it’s a special occasion!

September 14th is my 7 year wedding anniversary (today if you’re reading this post the day it went live).

For my special day, I wanted to do a really cute but elegant manicure. To do my nails, of course they had to match my outfit but I also created my manicure to match a beautiful dress I found over at ModCloth. One of the ModStylists over at ModCloth reached out to see if I would be interested in being a part of their Nail Klub and Dresses challenge. I happily agreed because when it comes to nail polish, I’m simply all for it. A great manicure is a must have “accessory” for any radiant beauty ;-)

Now, here’s my personal disclaimer. I’m not the best when it comes to nail art. Neither am I one who likes to wear a lot of prints. So, the Dazzling in the Daytime Dress was right up my alley where fashion is concerned – minimal texture print and simply elegant. It reminds me of a Jackie O. style dress when she was feeling a little daring :-)

I haven’t done my nails in quite some time (totally abnormal for me) because my nails had been undergoing a period of breaking and splitting. I finally traced it back to my poor eating habits. I’ve since begun correcting that and while my nails are in a short state right now, they are back on track for gaining a bit of length.

So that’s two special things to celebrate :-) (anniversary + healthier nails)

How To: ModCloth Dress Inspired Nails

To create my ModCloth inspired manicure, I used 3 different nail polishes from my favorite brands along with my  Nail Vinyls:

nail polish collection

    • Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure  #160, Shall We Dance? as the base

nail vinyls

    • Cover Girl Outlast Stay Brilliant, #230
    • China Glaze , #997 Street Chic

The Sally Hansen polish is actually a very pale pink but with just the right amount of application, it appears to be more of a neutral tan. It worked perfectly as the base because it’s the lightest color and darker colors cover nicely (hey, I said I was challenged when it came to nail designs. I know how to layer my polish though!)

This manicure was not only fun to do, it was really easy. So, if you are challenged for coming up with nail art, you’ll first need to get you some Nail Vinyls. They are a tremendous tool for those of us “skillfully challenged.”

ModCloth offers a nice selection of indie clothing, accessories, and decor. You’ll find everything from dresses to swimwear to underwear! In Review: Nail Fabulosity & Bells Kandi Thermal Nail Polishes

indie nail polish

thermal nail polishes

Last week I shared how I attended a NYCNail Girls Meetup. During that time I picked up quite a few new bottles of nail polishe including a couple of bottles of non-toxic thermal indie nail polish. I purchased a bottle from Nail Fabulosity and I received a bottle from Bell’s Kandi out of the grab bag.

Getting right to the point, I LOVE these thermal nail polishes. I know it isn’t all that new but it’s pretty new to me since I’ve stuck with “traditional” polish for so long.

I really like the gradient effect you get with thermal polishes.

Nail Fabulosity vs. Bell’s Kandi

indie nail polish

Up and coming new comer, Nail Fabulosity has joined the ranks of other Indie Polish creators like Bell’s Kandi. They both offer cruelty free non-toxic nail polish. These nail polishes do not contain the chemicals dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene or formaldehyde,

Not to pit the two against each other but there are some differences. Both are very good quality but here are the differences I noticed between the  bottles I received:

* The Nail Fabulosity color (Butterfly Kisses) pops almost immediately. I could have gone with one coat but used two for good measure :-) The thermal characteristic is very vivid and  pretty. I love how the gradient reminded me much of “sponging” (something I’ve never been good at)

Check out NailFabulosity here

* The Bells Kandi’s polish (Best Friends) is more of a pearlish color. I had to apply 3 coats to obtain the true color. Also, the gradient effect isn’t as visible. The gradient was slightly apparant (as seen in the photo above) but dissipated shortly after. Remember, mood rings? They would change colors with the temperature (mood). Well, this nail polish is sort of light blue most of the time but when thetemperature changes it becomes a slightly deeper blue but not really a gradient.

Check out Bell’s Kandi here

While there are differences in the final result of each thermal polish, it’s more than likely attributed to the characteristics of the two formulas (secret formulas no doubt!). Depending on the look you are going for, you may find different shades and effects with each brand.

The Coconut Oil Nail Experiment

coconut oil for nail growth

coconut oil

I’ve been on a quest to incorporate as many natural products in my personal care as much as possible. My skin and hair care regimen is 95% natural. When it comes to my nail care, everything I use is chemical based. There is non-toxic nail polish available but it still some level of chemicals additive. Even if you wear nail polish, the top coat you use is bound to contain chemicals. Then, there’s the nail treatments used to make the nails stronger. Those are completely chemically base.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not bashing nail polish or other nail car products. My nail strengthener of choice is completely unnatural. – Nailtek II. When I use it, I experience an immediate improvement in the strength of my nails.

So, why this coconut oil nail experiment?

The Decision to Try Coconut Oil on My Nails

I think it’s important to seek out natural alternatives for personal care whenever possible. Coconut oil is beneficial for helping you retain moisture. That’s why when I saw Hey Fran Hey hosting a 30 day healthy, beauty and fitness challenge, I decided to participate to some degree. I didn’t follow her dietary recommendations completely but I did eat some of the healthy foods while also incorporating the coconut oil application to my hands and nails daily to see what results I would achieve after 30 days. It was hard too! I have never gone this long without painting my nails.

Results of the Experiment

All in all I didn’t notice a significant increase in the growth of my nails by massaging coconut oil into them. I was experiencing nail growth before applying the coconut oil to my nails. As a matter of fact, I feel like my nails have become a little too flexible since applying the coconut oil. That flexibility has made my nails more vulnerable to breakage which is why you don’t notice any significant change in nail length. My nails broke several times over this past month.

Prior to beginning this experiment, my nails were harder and growing without experiencing breakage.

I experienced less breaks but more peeling before using the coconut oil. On the flip side, my hands are softer from applying the coconut oil to them daily. As you can see in the photos, my hands look slightly more youthful.

Will I continue using coconut oil on my hands and nails? Probably but I’m returning to using my beloved Nailtek II to keep my nails strong. Maybe using the two together will lead to an almost elimination of nail breakage. We will see.

Have you tried coconut oil on your hands for nail growth? What was your experience?
