Skin Care Regimens to Care for Sensitive, Dry, Normal, Oily and Acne Prone Skin

Dry Skin Type: Daily Skin Care Regimen

Dry skin is prone to premature wrinkles and needs extra care due to its lack of moisture and oil balance.  While dry skin can be uncomfortable and not physically attractive, following a daily skin care regimen will help keep the skin looking its best.

Here’s a simple 3 step dry skin care routine:

Dry Skin Type

Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Moisturize

1- Use an oil-based gel cleanser that will add moisture and oil to the skin and not strip it of any natural oils that may be present.

2- Use a light exfoliant once per week to remove dead skin cells and reveal a fresh layer of skin.

3- Use an oil & water based moisturizer that contains an SPF of 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays while adding necessary moisture and oil to the skin.  Water should be the first ingredient followed by a light natural oil. Avoid mineral oil and petroleum which clogs the skin.  Moisturizers with Shea Butter and Olive Oil are quite effective.

Note: All of your products should be alcohol-free.  Alcohol is very drying to the skin and must be avoided at all costs.  As a matter of fact, avoid skin care products that contain any harsh ingredients like sodium laurel sulfate or ingredients with the word “paraben” in them.

Dry skin can be uncomfortable and your choice of moisturizer is critical.

Always remove any makeup before going to be each night. This can be accomplished by using the cleanser for your skin type followed by your moisturizer.

Oily Skin Type: Daily Skin Care Regimen

There are pros and cons to having oily skin.  One big pro is that oily skin provides you with natural protection from wrinkles so you can stay younger looking longer.  The oil in the skin prevents it from drying out but sometimes that overproduction of oil can lead to clogged pores and ultimately acne.

Here’s a simple 5 step skin regimen for oily skin:

Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone, Decongest and Moisturize

1- Opt for a foaming facial wash or oil-free cleanser to remove the excess dirt and oils from the skin while protecting the natural oils in the skin.
2- Some skin care professionals may say you don’t need to exfoliate. I differ in that opinion and here’s why:  Skin cells die on a regular basis (as soon as every 5 days).
If you don’t exfoliate, those dead skin cells will sit right on top of a healthy layer of skin which influences clogged pores.
Women with oily skin will experience more radiant skin with regular weekly exfoliation.
3- Use an invigorating facial toner for oily skin to help close pores after cleansing and exfoliating.
4- Use a clay-based mask weekly to decongest clogged pores and combat the production of blackheads.
5- Use a water-based, oil-free moisturizer with an SPF of 30.  Since the goal is to balance the oil in your skin, you don’t want to add oil to the naturally oily prone skin.
Bonus: Pick up some pore cleansing strips from the closest drug store for quick removal of blackheads and any whiteheads around the nose area.
Finally, always remove any makeup before going to be each night. Makeup removal wipes are recommended, followed by using the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for your skin type.  It’s also best to do your facial masks in the evening for the sake of time.

Acne Prone Skin Type: Daily Skin Care Regimen

Oily skin tends to be acne prone and the two tend to be synonymous more often than not.  Breakouts around the forehead, jawline, and chin areas are common. Regardless of the cause of your breakouts, you still need to have a consistent daily skin care regimen which should include the same types of products as in the Oily Skin Care regimen with a little extra care.

Here’s a simple 5 step regimen for acne prone skin care:
Acne Prone Skin Type

Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone, Decongest and Moisturize

1- Apply a clarifying facial cleanser or a gentle foaming facial wash which will cleanse the skin and remove excess oil and dirt while drawing away toxins from the skin.
2- Use a noncomedogenic (non-pore clogging) moisturizer that is completely oil free and water based.  The moisturizer should also contain an SPF of 30.  Otherwise, you’ll need to apply sunscreen right after applying your moisturizer.
3- Use a micro-exfoliant that is non-abrasive. You should not feel crystals or any pebble-like materials rubbing against your skin. It will cause irritation.
4- Use a facial toner for acne-prone skin that contains salicylic acid.  Salicylic acid helps to reduce the instance of acne outbreaks.
5- Use a natural clay based mask to help decongest pores and minimize blackheads.

Sensitive SkinType: Daily Skin Care Regimen

People with sensitive skin are prone to breakouts due to reactions to ingredients in skin care products. This is why using natural or organic skin care products is in your best interest.  Avoid products that contain fragrances, dyes, and other harsh ingredients.

Here’s a simple 5 step sensitive skin care regimen:
Sensitive SkinType

Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone, Decongest and Moisturize

1- Use a hypo-allergic, fragrance-free, mild facial cleanser.
2- Use a fragrance-free and dye-free moisturizer that contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant with natural sun protection.  However, you will need to still find a hypoallergenic sunscreen for sensitive skin.
3- Use a mild hypo-allergenic facial peel to micro-exfoliate once per week. This is the gentlest form.
4- Use a natural toner like Witch Hazel to close your pores.  It’s much gentler on your skin than commercial products.
5- If you tend to get blackheads or whiteheads, you may use a special treatment mask for sensitive skin once per week.  An all natural clay based mask will work as well.

Again, due to the nature of sensitive skin, organic skin care products that are hypo-allergenic all around are best.

Always remove any makeup before going to bed each night by using the cleanser for your skin type followed by the witch hazel for toner and sensitive skin moisturizer.  It’s also best to do your facial peels in the evening for the sake of time.

Normal Skin Type: Daily Skin Care Regimen

People with normal skin conditions are blessed with balanced skin.  It’s not too dry or too oily.  Your normal skin care regimen is simple because you can use a variety of skin care products as long as you don’t have any problems with breakouts or sensitivity.

Here’s a simple 5 step regimen for normal skin care:
Normal Skin Typ

Cleanse, Exfoliate, Tone, Peel and Moisturize

1- Use a mild cleanser that will not strip the skin of its natural oils.
2- Exfoliate once per week to remove dead skin cells and reveal a fresh layer of skin.
3- Use a facial toner to close open pores after cleansing.
4- Use a peel-off mask weekly to gently peel away
5- Use a light moisturizer for normal skin that contains an SPF of 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Normal skin is by far the easiest to care for because it’s balanced.  However, during certain seasons you may experience slight changes in your skin type and you may need to refer to the Oily Skin Care or Dry Skin Care Regimen for tips.
Always remove any makeup before going to be each night. Makeup removal wipes are recommended, followed by using the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer for your skin type.  It’s also best to do your facial masks in the evening for the sake of time.
